Alitala reduce hand baggage allowance!!
To those of you who fly to Italy with just hand luggage, be careful. Alitalia have reduced their hand luggage weight from 10kg to 8kg. This is awkward for people travelling from countries with a 10kg allowance into Italy and onward. They allow you a shoulder bag so you can transfer some items into that. This is probably not a new rule but it is new to me...

Hi Ionian & Garybendall,
Just returned from Calabria on "Alitalia". Air One going out on both flights and the same on my return journey with Alitalia.
You are allowed 23 kg for the hold luggage which is labelled to SUF. They didn't seem particularly concerned about the hand luggage weight at the desks in LGW or SUF. There were some carry on hand luggage I noticed that must have been over the 8 kg allowance!
I flew LGW-MXP-SUF out and SUF-LIN-LHR on the way back. I had several hours at MXP and LIN and our luggage was at the destination to pick without any problems.
Some flights have little time between the next connection and may not catch up with the ongoing connecting flight.
I couldn't check in on-line going out and didn't bother for return journey. I was not given an onward Boarding pass at LGW for the MXP-SUF sector so had to go out through immigration and then to Check in desk at MXP for SUF. At SUF had both boarding cards given on my return journey.
MXP better for shopping than LIN so it maybe better to get your duty free at MXP. If you are purchasing several items, pay for the first lot as you maybe given a 20% discount card for your next purchase as long as it is bought on the same day.

Used AlItalia for 1st time, arrived back last night and cannot speak highly enough of them!
Went LHR -Rome FCo - Lamezia. Only just enough time to get from between terminals on outward journey But baggage goes straight on to Lamezia.
On return leg had Al Italia member of staff meet on arrival at FCO in Rome and took us straight from terminal 3 to 1 jumping to front of queue at passport control and quided us directly to gate required for onward flight, Dont think we could have made it without her, but what service !! 23 kg luggage allowance.
They didnt seem interested in size of anyones's hand luggage, complimentary drinks on both legs of journey and all for £258 for 2 people!!
Priced through Skyscanner and it does seem to vary a lot. Tried for same route in Sept and Ryan Air beat them on prices.

If you're lucky it does! but on the 2 occasions I've flown via Rome my baggage didn't go straight through to Lamezia. Lorica

We had heard lots of bad reports of luggage not arriving so We were sort of prepared.. maybe thats why we were so delighted that everything went to plan!
Perhaps Alitalia have learnt that its better to escort "in transit " passengers thro to gates than have to try and juggle onto other flights and courier baggage afterwards.

when we travelled back last year some friends of ours were on the same plane in our queue for bag drop and decided to ask the question re hand baggage only with pre printed boarding passes, they were taken to the front of the queue where the paper boarding passes were swapped for locally issued ones and then went through, they were told they could have gone straight through.
