I have found that Ryanair are more expensive than looking at rates on a comparison website.
In May and June when I've booked car hire in Lamezia going through rentalcars.com has proved to be very competitive.

For the last two years I have checked Ryanair against the comparison sites, usually Travel supermarket, and have never found them lower.

It is always best to compare deals to get the most competitive quotes as it is relatively easy to do it on-line.

Hi tonymccready,
Thanks for the tip re car hire with Ryanair.
They sent me an email as I am flying out on the 5th September to Lamezia and are doing a car sale promotion at the moment with 40% discount plus another 10% discount for a limited period. I think the promotion is expiring in a week.
I checked it out and found I have saved £54 by cancelling my original booking which was £128 and with a better car.
There is no cancellation fee for most car hire companies if you cancel more than 24 hours before pick up. You will have to wait for about 5-10 days before you get your refund but it is worth it.
Mimosa,
If you have booked or not as yet it is worth checking out the Ryanair car hire offers.

The up to 40% discounted Ryanair car hire sale finishes midnight the 24th August.

Interesting article re Excess Car Hire Insurance in the Sunday Times Travel section.
I have recently received my car hire excess reimbursement from Questor Insurance for the damage to the car I hired in June. I had £238.19 credited to my account but had to pay the £7.12 Fx transaction fee. I wasn't charged a 'Loss of car use' by the car hire company Hertz.

Cheeky buggers !!

Ryanair seem to be the cheapest at the moment. I booked through them last October and no pressure at the Lamezia car hire counter to purchase extras.

I used Ryanair Car Hire in June and they were the cheapest.
They used Goldcar and there was a heavy sell on extras at Lamezia, they quoted me an additional 20 euros per day for insurance, which I never took.

When I flew into Lamezia in May / June I used Ryanair and the car hire company I was referred to was Autovia / Ecovia and it was the best car rental price at the time.
The extra insurance they offered you I presume was Excess Car Hire Insurance which is well worth taking on so you won't have to pay the high excess they charge if you have damage to the car. Purchasing through thge car Hire Company can be expensive.
I take an annual policy Car Hire Excess Insurance policy with Questor which costs £40 a year.
I discovered on picking up the car that there was a €36 extra charge for my age of being over75! It didn't work out in the end to be the cheapest hire. There are companies that rent cars to drivers up to the age of 80 with no extra charge.

I always check across the net for cheapest car hire, including Ryanair.
I have also used Questor for years, however if never stops the sales pressure for insurance which appears to be rising by the year.
I personally like the companies that give you car with a few bumps on them as they seem to be less fussy when you take the car back.
It about time something was done to sort out rental companies, especially in Italy, although this type of sales pitch is now happening in the UK. I am sure the majority of small bumps that renters are charge for never get repaired.
